If industrial hemp is so useful — why does hardly anyone grow it?

Hemp is one of the oldest industrial crops in the world 🌱 But one of the youngest markets in the US 🇺🇸

People have grown it for centuries — rope, canvas, sailcloth, textiles. Then the US banned it for decades, lumped in with the drug it isn’t. Industrial hemp is a licensed field crop grown for stalk and seed, with THC capped at 0.3% under federal law. It became federally legal again only in 2018. So the modern American hemp market is barely eight years old. We’re still early.

🌿 Almost everything happening with hemp today is mechanical processing — separating fiber, pressing seed oil. It works, but there’s not much value in it. It’s an old craft, not new technology.

🧪 The real value sits one level up: chemical processing — breaking hemp down into higher-value materials. The gap between the two is large. In theory, hemp can feed into a huge range of end products.

But getting there is hard. Chemical processing isn’t something you buy off a shelf — it takes years of research to build.

BMW names hemp among the natural fibers it uses in interior trim, alongside flax and kenaf. Mercedes-Benz has used hemp-fiber composites in door panels for years.

In 2024, hempcrete — hemp mixed with a lime binder — went into the US model residential building code as an optional appendix that states and towns can adopt.

💬 What they have in common: the value isn’t in the raw plant. It’s in turning it into a material — lighter, stronger, able to replace something made from oil. That’s the step that takes real processing know-how.

It’s early, and we’d rather say that plainly. Standards are patchy, processing infrastructure is thin, and hemp materials compete with cheap synthetics. None of that is solved yet.

⚡️ That’s a reason to work on it, not against it. The hard part — the chemistry, the processing, the material science — is where there’s still room to build.

🔬 Our team is ten people, aged 20 to 60 — some with more than 40 years in industrial hemp research. We brought them together one by one, from different labs.

👨‍🔬 Long before any of this, we spent years in the lab. Three products went from there to industrial scale: microcrystalline cellulose, aerogels, and bioplastics.

Right now we’re building a large R&D lab in Minsk to take that work further.
