ATOM Green Capital (AgTech) ยท MRV: how proof actually works
Last time we explained what carbon credits are โ and why companies like Microsoft buy them.
We ended with the hardest part: anyone can say “my field captures carbon.” Proving it is another story.
๐ข The process has a name: MRV โ Monitoring, Reporting, Verification.
๐ข Translation: measure everything, save the data, then let an outside expert check your work.
Example: A bank never takes a homeowner’s word for what a house is worth โ it sends an appraiser ๐ MRV plays that role in the carbon market.
๐ Step 1: Before planting.
Soil samples are taken across the field. Weather stations and soil sensors are installed. This starting point is called the baseline. Without it, no one can show that carbon was added at all.
๐ฐ Step 2: During the season.
Sensors track the soil, satellites and drones measure crop growth, every field operation is logged. Nothing is self-reported. โ
๐งฎ Step 3: After harvest.
Fresh soil samples are compared against the baseline. Labs and models calculate how much COโ the field captured. Then the farm’s own emissions โ fuel, fertilizers, machinery โ are subtracted. Only the net result counts. Profit works the same way: earned minus spent.
โ
Step 4: Verification.
An auditor goes through the whole record โ a tax audit, but for carbon. If it passes, the credit is issued on a public registry under a serial number, the same way a dollar bill carries one. Once numbered, a credit cannot be sold twice.
๐ฐ Step 5: Sale.
A corporation buys the credit to offset its own emissions. The farmer gets paid.
Measure โก๏ธ prove โก๏ธ verify โก๏ธ sell.
No proof, no credit โ that’s the bottleneck of this entire market.
โ
Our part in this story starts long before any measuring. We already use technologies and methods that have been tested on real fields, and they make the land pull several times more COโ out of the air.
โ
The math is simple: the more COโ the land captures, the more credits the farmer earns. Drones, satellites and soil sensors just turn that captured carbon into numbers an auditor can check.
โน๏ธ One more thing โ because it’s fair to ask.
You don’t have to take a side in the climate debate to see what happens in this market.
๐ฟ A crop doesn’t pull COโ out of the air to make a political statement. It does it because that’s how plants work: the field breathes in COโ and turns it into grain, fiber and materials. That’s botany โ not politics.
Follow the money, and it moves in one direction: from corporations to farmers. A company pays the person who works the land for something the land already did. Never the other way around.
๐ชต A sawmill doesn’t burn its sawdust โ it sells it as pellets. Carbon works the same way: the field captures it along the way, and the market pays for it on top of the crops.
ๅผ็จ Even if the carbon credit market disappears tomorrow, the field, the fiber, the materials and the real products aren’t going anywhere.
Carbon was never the foundation โ it’s the bonus.
